• To understand how a variable speed pool pump works, it is best to compare the pump to a light bulb. With a traditional pool pump, like a light bulb, it is either on or off. This means it always operates at maximum power or at maximum speed. A variable speed pool pump is equivalent to having a dimmer for the light bulb.
